Mycoplasma Genitalium PCR Test – Urine or Vaginal Sample
Accurate PCR Testing for Mycoplasma Genitalium at Home
The Mycoplasma genitalium Detection by PCR Test from Repose Healthcare is a fast, private, and highly accurate way to check for Mycoplasma genitalium (Mgen) – a common but often overlooked sexually transmitted infection (STI).
Using advanced PCR (polymerase chain reaction) technology, this test can reliably detect even very low levels of Mgen DNA from a urine sample or vaginal swab, ensuring early diagnosis and treatment.
What is Mycoplasma Genitalium?
Mycoplasma genitalium is a sexually transmitted bacterium that infects the genital and urinary tracts. It is transmitted through unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex.
Many people with Mgen have no symptoms, which makes it easy to pass on unknowingly. When symptoms are present, they can include:
-
Painful urination (dysuria)
-
Urethral discharge in men
-
Vaginal discharge, spotting, or pelvic pain in women
-
Pain during sex (dyspareunia)
-
Post-coital bleeding
-
Lower abdominal pain
Because symptoms can be similar to chlamydia or gonorrhoea, accurate testing is essential for the right diagnosis and treatment.
Why PCR Testing is the Gold Standard
Our Mycoplasma genitalium test uses PCR technology, which is considered the most sensitive and specific method for detecting bacterial DNA.
-
High sensitivity – detects low bacterial loads
-
High specificity – reduces risk of false positives
-
Reliable – suitable for asymptomatic individuals and early detection
This means you get clear, reliable results, even if you have no symptoms.
Who Should Take This Test?
You may benefit from a Mycoplasma genitalium PCR test if you:
-
Have symptoms such as discharge, pelvic pain, or painful urination
-
Have been diagnosed with persistent or recurrent urethritis/cervicitis
-
Have a sexual partner who has tested positive for Mgen
-
Are undergoing investigation for pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
-
Have had unprotected sex and want a comprehensive STI screen
-
Are experiencing unexplained infertility or chronic pelvic pain
Sample Types Available
Repose Healthcare offers testing with two convenient sample options:
-
Urine sample – ideal for men and women
-
Vaginal swab – often preferred for women for higher sensitivity
Both samples are analysed in UKAS-accredited laboratories, ensuring accurate and clinically reliable results.
How the At-Home Test Works
-
Order online – delivered discreetly to your door
-
Collect your sample – simple urine or vaginal swab with full instructions
-
Return to the lab – prepaid return envelope included
-
Receive results – private, secure results online within a few working days
Understanding Your Results
Your report will clearly state:
-
Detected – Mycoplasma genitalium DNA found
-
Not Detected – no Mgen DNA found
If positive, your clinician can prescribe an appropriate antibiotic treatment plan. (For treatment guidance, resistance testing may also be recommended.)
Why Testing is Important
If left untreated, Mycoplasma genitalium can cause:
-
Persistent urethritis or cervicitis
-
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
-
Tubal infertility and ectopic pregnancy
-
Epididymitis (in men)
-
Increased risk of HIV transmission
Early detection is essential for effective treatment and to prevent complications or transmission to partners.

FAQS and Answers for Mycoplasma genitalium PCR test
1. What is Mycoplasma genitalium?
Answer:
Mycoplasma genitalium (Mgen) is a sexually transmitted bacterium that infects the urinary and genital tracts. Many people have no symptoms, but it can cause urethritis, cervicitis, pelvic pain, or complications such as infertility if untreated.
2. What is a Mycoplasma genitalium PCR test?
Answer:
The PCR test detects the DNA of Mgen using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology. It is highly sensitive and specific, making it the gold standard for identifying the infection from a urine sample or vaginal swab.
3. What is a Mycoplasma genitalium resistance test?
Answer:
The resistance test detects genetic mutations in Mgen that make it resistant to macrolide antibiotics (like azithromycin). This ensures your healthcare provider can prescribe the most effective treatment.
4. Who should take a Mycoplasma genitalium test?
Answer:
You should test if you experience symptoms such as painful urination, unusual discharge, pelvic pain, post-coital bleeding, or if you’ve had unprotected sex or a partner tested positive. It is also recommended for those with persistent or recurrent urethritis or cervicitis.
5. How do I collect my sample at home?
Answer:
For PCR and resistance testing, you can use:
-
Urine sample – suitable for men and women
-
Vaginal swab – preferred for higher sensitivity in women
Full instructions are included in the kit, and samples are returned via prepaid envelope.
6. How accurate are these tests?
Answer:
PCR-based tests are highly accurate, detecting even low levels of bacterial DNA. Resistance testing is also reliable, identifying mutations associated with macrolide resistance to guide effective treatment.
7. How long does it take to get results?
Answer:
Results are usually available within 2–5 working days after the laboratory receives your sample. Reports are delivered securely online.
8. What happens if my test is positive?
Answer:
A positive PCR test confirms Mgen infection. If you also took the resistance test, your report will indicate whether macrolide resistance is present. Your clinician can then prescribe the most appropriate antibiotic.
9. Can I take the test if I have no symptoms?
Answer:
Yes. Many Mgen infections are asymptomatic, and testing is important for early detection and to prevent complications or transmission to partners.
10. Is the test private and discreet?
Answer:
Yes. The kit is delivered in discreet packaging, and your results are securely available online. All testing and reporting are confidential.
11. Can the test help prevent complications?
Answer:
Yes. Early detection and targeted treatment help prevent complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, epididymitis, and ongoing discomfort or recurrent infections.
12. Do I need a doctor’s referral to order the test?
Answer:
No. Repose Healthcare offers these tests directly to you without a GP referral, allowing convenient and private at-home testing.
